Part 23, Mark 6:1-6 ‘No Welcome Home’
Jesus returns home to Nazareth and receives a very frosty reception.
This week Sean looks at what happened when the local community in Nazareth were completely baffled as to how one of the local tradesmen, who they had seen grow up, was now causing such a stir with his insight into scriptures, his miracles and his band of misfit followers in tow. This was a huge stumbling block for that community and they just couldn’t make it add up and Jesus was rejected in his own home town. This would become a repeating pattern, as rejection of Jesus would also come from the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and the nation and eventually see him crucified.
The local community thought they knew Jesus. There can be a risk that we become so familiar and comfortable with a Jesus who fits what we think he should saying and doing, that we miss what he is actually saying, and doing - and why.
"A Prophet Without Honour" Mark 6:1-6a
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offence at him.
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.—————————————————————
